Established in 1953, the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) in Lucknow is one of India's leading institutions for botanical research. Spread over 75 acres, it houses a renowned botanical garden and state-of-the-art research facilities.

Research Divisions

Plant Biotechnology

Focusing on genetic improvement, tissue culture, molecular markers, and transgenic development for crop enhancement and medicinal plants. Current projects include drought-resistant varieties and high-yield aromatic plants.

Current Project: Genome sequencing of endangered medicinal species Rauvolfia serpentina for conservation and drug discovery.

Plant Ecology & Conservation

Studying plant-environment interactions, climate change impacts, and biodiversity conservation strategies. Maintains the National Herbarium with over 100,000 specimens and leads IUCN Red List assessments for Indian flora.

Initiative: "Green Lucknow" project planting 50,000 native trees to improve urban air quality and biodiversity.

Natural Product Chemistry

Isolating, characterizing, and developing bioactive compounds from plants for pharmaceutical, agricultural, and industrial applications. State-of-the-art analytical facilities including HPLC-MS and NMR spectroscopy.

Discovery: Novel anti-inflammatory compound from Bacopa monnieri showing promise in preclinical trials.

NBRI Botanical Garden

A living museum of plants and a center for conservation, education, and recreation since 1953.

The NBRI Botanical Garden, formerly known as the National Botanic Gardens, houses over 5,000 plant species from India and around the world across specialized sections:

  • Medicinal Plant Section: 800+ species with therapeutic value
  • Cactus & Succulent House: Rare desert plants
  • Palm Garden: 100+ palm species
  • Orchidarium: 300+ exotic orchid varieties
  • Bonsai Garden: Artistic miniature trees

Visitor Hours: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM (Tuesday to Sunday)
Entry Fee: ₹50 for adults, ₹20 for children (5-12 years)
Guided Tours: Available at 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM

Education & Training

NBRI offers doctoral programs in collaboration with the Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research (AcSIR) and several universities. Research areas include:

  • Plant Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering
  • Plant Systematics and Taxonomy
  • Plant Ecology and Environmental Science
  • Natural Product Chemistry and Pharmacology
  • Plant Microbe Interactions

Admission: Through national-level tests (CSIR-UGC NET, GATE) followed by interview.
Fellowship: ₹31,000-35,000 per month as per CSIR guidelines.
Application Deadline: 30th April each year.

We offer research internships for undergraduate and postgraduate students (minimum 4 weeks duration). Projects are available in all research divisions.

Eligibility: Students pursuing B.Sc./M.Sc. in Botany, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or related fields with minimum 75% marks.
